Mahjong, what's that?
American Mahjong is a dynamic and engaging variant of the traditional Chinese tile game, played with 4 people. It’s a perfect blend of luck, strategy, and social fun that will keep you returning for more. The goal? Be the first player to create a winning hand by drawing and discarding tiles. While luck plays a part in drawing tiles, the real challenge is deciding which tiles to keep and which to discard - bringing a layer of strategic thinking that makes every game unique and so much fun!Playing Mahjong is about more than just winning. It’s about the shared experience of problem-solving, friendly chatter, laughter, and a sense of camaraderie around the table. Whether you’re playing casually with friends or in a competitive setting, it’s the perfect way to bond, engage, and enjoy social time. And, experience the thrill of declaring “Mahjong” when you complete your winning hand!

You have questions, I have answers
Is American Mahjong the same as Chinese Mahjong?
It's very similar, but it's not the same. When Mahjong became popular in the United States in the 1920's, variations were introduced from the original Chinese game. I play and teach American Mahjong. We use tile racks, a National Mah Jongg League card, and jokers. These components are not present in the Chinese version.
Does Mahjong require math?
Don't worry, no! You don't need any math or other superpowers. Just an open mind, desire to have fun, and enjoyment of a little learning along the way. As the saying goes - if I can do it, so can you!
I want to learn. Should I schedule a lesson?
Most certainly yes! Once you get familiar with the tiles, the playing card and game format, you'll be good to go. With my Mahjong Made Easy method for teaching new players, you'll be well on your way to Mahjong fun with just 2 lessons. They are a wonderful way to start you and your friends on your new obsession!
What do I need to bring to the lesson?
I have everything to get you started. Just bring yourself and an open mind! Once you finish your lessons, you'll want to have a set of tiles to continue to play on your own. American Mahjong is usually played with four players, but there are interesting variations for three, two or even one player. When you're ready to purchase your set, I can advise you on the options. (Pssst... and get you a discount as well!)
