Preparing for Your Lesson

Think of this as sitting down with your personal Mahjong coach. I’ll guide you step-by-step so you can shortcut the overwhelm and begin playing with confidence.

Here are a few simple things to have ready before our session.

  • American Mahjong Set

    • You’ll want an American Mahjong set with racks and pushers for the lesson. Look for a set with 152 tiles (including 8 jokers). Chinese Mahjong sets typically have 144 tiles and no jokers, so they won’t work for American Mahjong play.

    • If you’re just getting started, a starter set from Amazon works perfectly well.

    • If you’re planning to play Mahjong regularly, you may enjoy investing in a more elevated set. You can see my recommended sets here.

    • Be sure your set includes 4 racks with pushers, as these are used in American Mahjong play.

  • Mahjong Card

    • If you already have the current National Mah Jongg League card, feel free to use it during our lesson. If not, no worries - a downloadable practice card will be provided before class, so you’ll be able to follow along easily.

Once your lesson is booked, you’ll receive a short preparation email to ensure you're completely ready for our time together.
