5 Myths About Learning American Mahjong (That Keep Women from Playing!)

When I first sat down at a Mahjong table, I was just looking for a fun hobby. What I found? A full-blown obsession.

But before the obsession, I had questions. I had doubts. And, I had myths in my head that made me think I’d never get it.

If you’ve been Mahjong-curious but something’s been holding you back… this one’s for you.

Let’s bust the 5 biggest myths I hear all the time - so you can get your Mahj on with confidence.

Myth #1: Only Grandmas Play American Mahjong”

I hear this one all the time.

Yes, your aunties and grandmas may love it - but guess what? So do moms juggling toddlers, women fresh into retirement, twenty-somethings craving connection, and just about everyone looking for something social, fun, and not in a bar.

Mahjong is having a moment. And this moment? It’s for you.

Myth #2: "Learning Mahjong is Too Hard”

Look, I won’t lie - Mahjong looks intimidating. So many tiles, so many rules, and what the heck is a Charleston?

But here’s the truth: you just need the right guide.

My Mahjong Made Simple method is designed to break it all down - step-by-step, without jargon or pressure. Most of my students feel comfortable after just two lessons.

Learning should be fun, not frustrating. And with the right support? It is.

Myth #3: “You Can’t Play Mahjong Without a Group””

No friends who play yet? That’s okay!

You can come solo to my group lessons and find your Mahjong crew. Or, if you do have a few curious friends, I offer private group lessons just for y’all.

Mahjong brings people together - so don’t worry about having your foursome figured out yet.

We’ll build that table together, tile by tile.

Myth #4: “You Need to Speak Chinese to Play”

Good news, no Chinese required!

American Mahjong has easy-to-recognize symbols and numbers. You’ll learn all you need in English, and we don’t touch the language part at all in my classes.

The tiles will start to make sense quicker than you think - especially when we make it playful and lighthearted.

Myth #5: “You Need to Be Good at Math to Learn Mahjong”

Here’s the real deal: if you can count to 9 and match patterns, you can play Mahjong.

You don’t need to be a brainiac, a mathlete, or even remotely competitive. This game is about rhythm, memory, and fun - not formulas.

And best of all? You can ask questions, take your time, and laugh through the learning curve.

No judgment here.

Ready to ditch the myths and get in the game?

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to learn Mahjong, this is it.

Whether you want to dip your toes into a group lesson or gather your besties for a private one, I’ve got a cozy seat at the table with your name on it.
