So, What Is Mahjong?
American Mahjong is the ultimate game of strategy, luck, and fun! Played with 4 players and 152 tiles, it’s the perfect balance of challenge and excitement that keeps you coming back for more. The more you play, the more you’ll fall in love with the game - and trust me, it’s an addiction you’ll enjoy!

Mahjong History & Culture
Mahjong has been bringing people together for centuries, originating in China and evolving into over 40 unique styles worldwide. From Japanese Riichi to Singaporean, Taiwanese, Malaysian, Hong Kong, and Vietnamese variations, each version has its own flair, but the heart of the game remains the same - a brilliant mix of strategy, tradition, and social connection that spans generations. You’ve probably spotted Mahjong making waves in pop culture, too! It’s had scene-stealing moments in Crazy Rich Asians, Driving Miss Daisy, and The Joy Luck Club. Even The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel gives Mahjong a nod, highlighting its deep roots in both Jewish and Asian communities. No matter where or how it’s played, Mahjong continues to charm, challenge, and connect people across the world.
Why Is Mahjong Everywhere Right Now?
Mahjong isn’t just a game - it’s a full-blown movement. With roots tracing back to ancient China, this timeless tile game has been capturing hearts for generations. But lately, it’s been having a major moment, and for a good reason!
Modern brands have reimagined Mahjong tiles with vibrant sets, bringing fresh energy and style to the table. And let’s be honest - the pandemic had us all searching for new ways to stay entertained at home, then craving any excuse to gather in person once the world opened back up. Mahjong is the perfect mix of social connection, strategy, and just the right amount of luck - the ultimate escape from our busy, tech-driven lives.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), which introduced the American version in the 1930s. Their annual card and standardized rules have shaped the way we play today, keeping the game exciting, dynamic, and endlessly replayable.

Does Mahjong require math?
Don't worry, no! You don't need any math or other superpowers. Just an open mind, desire to have fun, and enjoyment of a little learning along the way. As the saying goes - if I can play it, so can you!
Can anyone play?
Absolutely! Mahjong might look a little tricky at first, but with the right guidance (that’s where I come in!), you’ll be hooked before you know it. Whether you’re a game night pro or just looking to shake things up with something new, there’s a seat at the table with your name on it. No matter your background, experience, or learning style, you’re in the right place.
Do you always need four people to play Mahjong?
Nope! While four players is the standard, you can absolutely play with three people and still have a great game. If it’s just the two of you, there are fun ways to adapt the game as well - because Mahjong is too good to sit out just because you’re missing a player!
I want to learn. Should I schedule a private lesson or attend a group class?
If you love a cozy, personalized vibe or want to learn with your crew, a private lesson is the way to go - it’s all about you, your pace, and lots of hands-on guidance. But if you’re up for meeting new people and learning in a fun, social setting, group classes are perfect! Either way, you’ll be in great hands with me and on your way to Mahjong mastery in no time.
How do private lessons work?
Gather your family, your besties, your co-workers or your neighbors and be ready for a good time! All you need is a table and chairs for everyone. Lessons are priced per group; pricing varies depending on the size of your group. See more details here.
What do I need to bring to a group class?
Nothing, just a positive attitude and an open mind!
Do I need my own Mahjong set?
No, you don't need it but I'm sure you'll want it after your lessons are finished! American Mahjong is usually played with four players, but there are interesting variations for three, two or even one player. When you're ready to purchase your set, I can advise you on the options. (Pssst... and get you a discount as well!)
