Mahjong Setup FAQs

What do I need to play American Mahjong?

You’ll need four main items:

  • A full set with 152 tiles. Be sure the set you're considering has 8 jokers and 8 flowers. If there are extras (additional jokers, flowers, or blanks), you can set them aside.
  • Racks with pushers: One per player to organize and protect your hand. Racks usually come in a set of 4.
  • Mat. Optional but highly recommended for smooth, quiet play and easy tile visibility. I prefer neoprene mats over other materials because you can easily clean them in the washing machine if needed.
  • NMJL card. The official rule card used by all players.

Do I need all of this to take a lesson or play with a group?

Not at all. I bring everything you need for in-person lessons. But once you're hooked (and trust me, you will be!), you'll want your own setup for play and practice.

Can I play without a mat?

Technically yes, but a mat really levels up your experience. It keeps tiles from slipping, dampens noise, and adds a polished look to your setup.
